Buying guide

The emerald cut on a lab-grown sapphire

An emerald cut has long, parallel step facets and cut corners. Instead of scattered sparkle, it shows broad flashes and an even sweep of color, which suits a saturated lab-grown sapphire. A lab-grown sapphire has the same chemistry as a natural sapphire and rates 9 on the Mohs scale, so it handles daily wear well.

Blue, pink or yellow

  • Blue lab-grown sapphire: the classic choice, crisp against white gold or platinum.
  • Pink lab-grown sapphire: soft color that pairs well with rose gold.
  • Yellow lab-grown sapphire: bright and sunny, often set in yellow gold.

Band styles, carat weight and price

Most designs add a pave band of lab-grown diamonds; others keep the metal plain, curve it into a bypass or twist, or lift the center on cathedral arches. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and most bands are about 1.8 to 2.2 mm wide. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $700 and $1,050.
