A solitaire has a single main stone. A cluster solitaire engagement ring keeps that single center but groups small accents near it, so the ring has more sparkle than a plain solitaire while the center still leads. Graduated accents get smaller as they move away from the center, which draws the eye back to the main stone and keeps the outline neat.
The setting takes a round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, Asscher, radiant, marquise, pear or heart center. Fancy blue, pink, yellow, green and black centers are also offered. Round and oval centers keep the look soft; emerald, Asscher and radiant give it a more structured outline.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, in white, yellow or rose. The band is offered at about 2 or 2.2 mm wide; the narrower band makes the center look larger, and the wider one feels sturdier. The setting starts from about $300, and most metal choices are around $950. That price covers the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
