Buying guide
An Asscher cut is a square step cut with clipped corners and long, mirror-like facets. A channel band repeats that clean geometry: the accents sit in a straight groove with no prongs between them, so the band looks tidy and feels smooth. Some designs use round accents, others rectangular baguettes that echo the steps of the center. Cathedral styles lift the center on arches of metal, and milgrain or filigree details give a few designs a vintage feel.
You choose the center stone in the next step. Every design can take a colorless center or a fancy pink, blue, yellow or green one, and some are made for a black center. A colored Asscher shows its tone across the broad table, while a colorless one shows the hall-of-mirrors pattern the cut is known for. Prong styles vary, from four corner claws to double claw prongs.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and every design is also made in platinum and silver. A few designs list band widths from 2 to 3.5 mm, the wider one for a bolder channel. Prices are for the setting only and start under $300; most settings fall between about $1,100 and $1,500. The center is priced when you choose it.
