An asscher cut is a square step cut with trimmed corners, which gives it an octagonal outline. Its long, flat facets create a hall-of-mirrors look from above, with less scattered sparkle than a brilliant cut and more clean flashes of light. Because a step cut shows the inside of the stone clearly, it suits a solitaire, where nothing distracts from the center.
Nearly every design can hold a colorless center or a fancy pink, blue, yellow or green one, and some can hold a black center. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices are for the setting: they start under $150, and most settings are between about $600 and $1,100. The center is priced when you choose it.
