A solitaire leaves the center alone on the band, which suits the Asscher's geometry. Its square outline, cropped corners and stepped facets read clearly from across a room. With no large side stones competing, the eye goes straight to the mirrored pattern in the middle. Choose a clean stone, since step cuts show inclusions more easily than brilliant cuts.
Plain bands come thin or rounded. A thin band makes the square center look larger, and a rounded band feels soft against the finger. Pavé bands add small lab-grown diamond accents along the shank. A hidden halo places accents under the center so they catch light from the side while the top view stays clean. The cathedral setting raises the center on arches over a graduated pavé band.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose. White gold and platinum suit the cool lines of a step cut, while yellow and rose gold give it a vintage warmth.
