Buying guide
A marquise is long and narrow with a point at each end. For its weight it has one of the largest top surfaces of any shape, so a 1 carat marquise looks bigger than a round of the same weight. The long outline also makes the finger look slimmer. Set north to south, it gives a 1ct marquise solitaire ring a bold, vintage-leaning look.
The two points are the most exposed part of the stone. Prongs that cover the tips protect them from knocks, so check them now and then, as with any ring worn every day. A plain band keeps the outline clean, while a pave band adds a line of small lab-grown diamonds. The hidden halo places small stones under the center, and the cathedral design raises the marquise on arches over a graduated pave band.
Platinum is naturally white and the densest option. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold; yellow gold suits the vintage feel of a marquise, and white metals keep it crisp. Most rings are between about $975 and $1,100 in the lowest-priced metal, with the lab-grown diamond center included.
