The Diamond Buying Guide

Buying a diamond comes down to a handful of confident decisions. Here's the order we recommend — and how to get the most beauty for your budget.

You don't need to be a gemmologist to buy a beautiful diamond. Work through these seven steps in order and you'll spend your budget exactly where it counts.

1. Set your budget

Decide a comfortable number first — it focuses every choice that follows. Lab-grown diamonds stretch a budget remarkably, so expect a larger, higher-grade stone than a mined equivalent at the same price.

2. Prioritise cut

Cut drives sparkle more than any other factor. Always choose Excellent / Ideal — it's what makes a diamond come alive. Learn more in the 4Cs guide.

3. Choose a shape

Pick the silhouette that suits the wearer's style and hand. Compare all ten shapes.

4. Balance colour & clarity

Aim for near-colourless (G–H) and eye-clean (VS–SI). These grades look flawless to the naked eye at a fraction of the price of the very top of the scale.

5. Maximise carat — smartly

Buy just under the "magic" weights (for example 1.9ct instead of 2.0ct) for a near-identical look on the finger and a real saving.

6. Choose the setting & metal

Solitaire, pavé or halo; platinum, white, yellow or rose gold. The setting shapes the entire look — and the right one can make your centre stone appear even larger.

7. Insist on certification

Only ever buy a diamond with an independent IGI or GIA report. Here's what to look for.

Short on time?

Spend on cut, choose G–H colour and VS–SI clarity, then put everything else into carat — and insist on certification. Or simply tell our specialists your budget and we'll do it for you.
