Buying guide
A halo is a ring of small stones around the center that makes it look larger and brighter. The vintage touch comes from the metalwork around it. Milgrain, a fine beaded edge, runs along the halo or band on most of these settings. Some add art deco side panels, scroll or filigree galleries, leaf shapes or engraving. A few use bezel accents, a channel set band or a split shank for a bolder outline.
Some designs offer a band width choice, from about 2 to 2.4 mm.
Every setting comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white gold. 14K is a common choice for daily wear, and 18K has more gold content. White gold is usually rhodium plated for its bright white finish, and the plating can be renewed over the years. Settings start from about $650, and most fall between about $850 and $1,100. That price is for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it. Most designs can hold a fancy blue, yellow, pink or green center, and some a black center.
