Buying guide
A solitaire has one center stone, and the band sets the mood. Many designs line the band with pave lab-grown diamond accents, while others keep a plain or wide flat band that puts all the attention on the amethyst. Some designs add a split shank, a bypass or twisted band, floral or leaf details, or a hidden halo of lab-grown diamond accents that shows from the side. Band widths run from about 1.8 mm to 2.5 mm on most designs.
Amethyst is purple quartz and the birthstone for February. It rates 7 on the Mohs scale, so it handles daily wear with some care: take the ring off for the gym, gardening or cleaning. White gold keeps the purple cool and crisp, from soft lilac to deep violet. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, and long shapes like oval, pear and marquise look larger on the finger for their weight.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Higher karats hold more gold and cost more; lower karats are a bit harder and cost less. Prices start under $600, and most rings are between about $900 and $1,050.
