About amethyst

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the birthstone for February. Its color ranges from a soft lilac to a deep royal purple, and the richer tones are the most prized. It rates 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it suits everyday wear with some care: take the ring off for gardening, the gym or heavy cleaning. Long, strong sunlight can fade some amethyst over the years, so store the ring away from a sunny windowsill.

Choosing a setting style

  • Solitaire: a single amethyst on a plain or pave band, the simplest amethyst ring in white gold.
  • Pave and side stones: lab-grown diamond accents along the band, the most common choice in this collection.
  • Halo and double halo: a frame of lab-grown diamonds around the center that makes the purple look larger.
  • Three stone, floral and vintage: side stones, petal shapes or milgrain detail for a softer, older look.
  • Split shank and bypass: a band that divides or wraps near the center for a more open outline.

Gold karat, size and price

White gold gives purple a cool, crisp contrast, and its rhodium plating can be refreshed over the years. Every design comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white gold. Nearly every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, so you can pick a modest stone or a bold cocktail size. Rings start under $600, and most are between about $900 and $1,050.
