Buying guide
Tanzanite is a blue to violet gem found in only one small area of Tanzania. It shows different tones from different angles, shifting between blue and purple as it moves, which is part of its charm on the ear. It is one of the December birthstones. At about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale it is softer than sapphire, so earrings, which take few knocks, are one of the best ways to wear it.
Round and cushion tanzanite give the most sparkle and show both the blue and the violet. Oval and pear shapes stretch the color into a longer outline. Princess and emerald cuts look tidy and modern, and the emerald cut shows the color in broad flashes. Marquise reads slim and bold, and a heart makes a sweet gift.
Clean the studs with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then dry them well. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam and sudden heat, and store the pair apart from harder stones so the surface stays polished. Wipe the silver with a soft cloth when it dulls. Pairs start under $175.
