Buying guide
Tanzanite is a blue-violet stone found in one small area of Tanzania, and it shares the December birthstone with turquoise and zircon. Its color shifts between blue and violet as you turn it, and the warm tone of rose gold brings out the violet side. Tanzanite rates about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than sapphire, so studs are a sensible way to wear it: earrings take far fewer knocks than rings. Clean with warm soapy water, never in an ultrasonic cleaner.
The carat figure is the total weight of both stones, from 0.5 to 10 carats. Up to about 1 carat total weight suits everyday wear, and larger sizes show deeper color. 10K rose gold is the most durable and the most affordable, 14K balances color and strength, and 18K has the richest pink tone. Prices start just under $400.
