Buying guide
Most of these settings carry milgrain, a row of tiny metal beads along the edges that was popular in Edwardian and Art Deco rings. Many also use filigree, open scrolled metalwork under the center, and some add hand-style engraving, leaf and floral motifs or graduated stones. These details give a new ring an heirloom look while it is built to current standards.
About half the designs surround the oval with a halo of lab-grown diamond accents, which makes the center look larger. Solitaires keep the oval on its own, so the vintage detail sits in the band and gallery. Smaller groups offer three-stone layouts, bezel accents, hidden halos under the center, clusters, cathedral shoulders and split shanks. Band widths run from about 1.8 to 2.8 mm on the designs that list one.
An oval looks longer than a round of the same weight and makes the finger look slimmer. Rose gold's pink tone comes from copper; 10K and 14K are slightly pinker and harder, and 18K is richer. Most designs also take a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some take black. Settings start from about $500, and most are between about $900 and $1,200. That price is for the setting; the center is chosen and priced in the next step.
