Buying guide

How an oval center sits in a pavé setting

An oval is an elongated brilliant shape, so it looks longer on the finger than a round of the same weight and can make the hand look slimmer. A pavé band adds a line of small lab-grown diamond accents that leads the eye toward the center. On a halo design the pavé circles the oval as well, which adds width and makes the center look bigger. A solitaire with a pavé band keeps the oval as the clear focus.

Styles to compare

  • Halo and hidden halo: a frame of small accents around the oval, or tucked under it so it shows from the side.
  • Solitaire with pavé: one center stone over a set band.
  • Vintage and milgrain: beaded edges and engraved details that suit rose gold's warm tone.
  • Split shank and twisted: bands that divide or wind toward the center for a fuller look.

Rose gold, karat and price

Rose gold gets its pink tone from copper in the alloy. Every design here comes in 10K, 14K or 18K: 10K has the most copper and the deepest pink, while 18K is softer in color and richer in gold. Most designs can also be set for a fancy blue, green, yellow or pink center, and some for a black center. Settings start under $500, and most are between about $900 and $1,200, for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
