Buying guide

What makes a huggie different from a hoop

A huggie is a small, thick hoop that hugs the earlobe instead of hanging below it. Because it sits close, it is easy to wear every day, to sleep in, and to stack with studs in a second or third piercing. Larger hoops swing more and show more metal; rose gold huggies keep the sparkle right at the lobe.

Pave, bezel and drop styles

  • Pave: rows of small lab-grown diamonds along the front of the hoop, the most common style here.
  • Bezel set: each lab-grown diamond sits in a metal rim, a smooth finish that won't catch on hair or sweaters.
  • Drops and charms: some huggies carry a pear, oval or floral lab-grown diamond drop for a little movement.
  • Solitaire: a few designs hold a single larger stone, such as an emerald cut or heart.

Carat weight, gold and price

Most pairs are delicate, with many designs at about 0.4 or 0.45 carat total weight, and a few bolder designs go from 1 up to 3 carats total weight or more. Rose gold's warm pink tone flatters most skin tones and makes white lab-grown diamonds look bright against the metal. Choose 10K, 14K or 18K rose gold; higher karats look a little richer in color. Pairs start under $200, and most are around $750 to $800.
