Buying guide
A radiant cut is a rectangle or square with trimmed corners and brilliant faceting. Baguettes and trapezoids echo its straight sides for a clean, structured look. Round side stones add sparkle and soften the outline. Marquise and pear side stones point toward the center and give the ring more movement, and a few designs use trillions. Many designs follow a three stone layout, one stone on each side of the center.
Channel set side stones sit in a groove between two metal walls, with no prongs on top, which keeps the band smooth. Pave bands line the shank with many small stones, and cluster designs group small stones at the shoulders or around the side stones. Some designs add a halo, milgrain, a bezel or a split shank. Most designs can also be made for a fancy blue, yellow, pink or green center, and many for black.
Every design comes in white, yellow or rose gold in 10K, 14K or 18K and in platinum, and nearly all in Silvadium, a tarnish-resistant sterling silver. White gold and platinum suit colorless and blue centers, yellow gold warms the look, and rose gold softens it. Platinum is dense and wears slowly; silver is the lowest-priced choice. Settings start under $250, and most are between about $850 and $1,350. The price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
