Buying guide

Choosing a drop length and style

Short drops with one stone or a small halo sit close to the earlobe and work every day. Linear and graduated drops, where lab-grown diamonds step down or up in size along a line, add length and movement and suit evening wear. Floral and cluster designs spread the stones wider for a fuller look near the face. If you wear your hair down, a longer drop shows more; with hair up, a shorter one often looks balanced.

Shapes and settings

  • Halo and double halo: small lab-grown diamonds frame the main stone so it looks larger.
  • Bezel: a smooth metal rim around each stone, with nothing to catch on hair or sweaters.
  • Pavé bars and cluster tops: the stone hangs from a sparkling bar or flower stud.
  • Pear and marquise drops: pointed shapes that naturally lead the eye downward.

Backs vary by design, including lever backs and screw backs on some pairs.

Weight, platinum and price

Total weight varies widely: many pairs sit between about 1 and 4 carats total weight, a few start at 0.5 carat, and a few larger statement pairs go well beyond that. Platinum is naturally white, so it shows colorless lab-grown diamonds well, and it is dense enough to hold stones firmly through daily wear. Prices start under $700, and most pairs cost between about $1,650 and $2,350.
