Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite and a December birthstone. Its color shifts between blue and violet as the stone moves. At about 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale it is softer than sapphire, so a tanzanite ring worn daily needs gentle care: remove it for sports or heavy work, avoid sudden heat, and clean it with mild soap and warm water.
