Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite and a December birthstone. Its color shifts between blue and violet as the stone moves. At about 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale it is softer than sapphire, so a tanzanite ring worn daily needs gentle care: remove it for sports or heavy work, avoid sudden heat, and clean it with mild soap and warm water.
The pear shape gives tanzanite a long, graceful outline and makes the finger look slimmer when the point faces the fingertip. Because the tip is the most exposed part, pear shaped tanzanite engagement rings with a halo of lab-grown diamond accents offer extra protection. Solitaires and bypass bands keep the look clean; pave, split shank and vintage designs add detail.
White gold, platinum and silver bring out tanzanite's blue; yellow and rose gold play up its violet side. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Prices start under $300, and most rings fall between about $750 and $1,050.
