Buying guide
A halo traces the outline of the oval, so the lab-grown ruby looks larger and the red reads deeper against the white stones around it. A lab-grown ruby is corundum, the same mineral as a natural ruby, and rates 9 on the Mohs scale, so it stands up well to everyday wear. The halo also adds a little metal around the center's edge.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, and most bands are 1.8 to 2.2 mm wide. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K; rose and yellow gold bring out warm red, while platinum and white gold make the halo look whiter. Prices start under $350, and most fall between about $750 and $1,000 at the smallest option.
