A lab-grown ruby is corundum, the same mineral as a natural ruby, grown in controlled conditions instead of mined. It rates 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among common gems, so it holds up well to daily wear. Lab-grown rubies tend to have strong, even red color and good clarity, and they cost far less than natural rubies of a similar size and quality.
The oval looks larger than a round stone of the same weight, lengthens the finger and has no sharp points to protect. A solitaire lets the red stand on its own. An oval lab-grown ruby ring with a halo frames the center in lab-grown diamond accents, and pave bands add sparkle along the shank. Three stone, split shank, twisted and vintage designs add more shape and detail.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow and rose gold bring out lab-grown ruby's warmth, while white gold, platinum and silver make the red look brighter by contrast. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight on the product page. Prices start under $300, and most rings fall between about $750 and $1,050.
