Buying guide
A lab-grown pink sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as a natural sapphire, grown under controlled conditions instead of mined. It has the same hardness, about 9 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches and suits earrings you wear often. Lab-grown stones tend to show even color and fewer inclusions, and they cost less than natural pink sapphires of similar size.
The oval is a stretched round brilliant. Its length makes the stone look a little larger than a round of the same weight, and on the ear it reads as soft and slightly elongated. The basket setting grips each oval with prongs joined by an open frame underneath, which keeps the stud close to the earlobe and lets light reach the stone from the sides.
