Buying guide

How a marquise looks on the ear

A marquise is long and narrow with a point at each end. Worn upright, it shows more length than a round stone of the same weight, so a modest size still reads well on the ear. The cool blue of the topaz sits brightest against white gold, platinum or silver, while yellow and rose gold give it a warmer frame.

Choosing a size

Size is chosen on the product page as total weight, from 0.5 to 10 carats. Around 0.5 to 1 carat total weight makes a neat everyday stud. At 2 to 3 carats the stones become the focus of an outfit, and the larger sizes are bold statement studs. Prices start under $200, and many choices sit around $400, depending on metal and size.

Caring for blue topaz

Blue topaz is 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it handles daily wear well, but a hard knock can chip it. Take the studs off for the gym, cleaning and swimming. Wash them in warm soapy water with a soft brush, and skip ultrasonic cleaners and high heat. Check the prongs now and then, since the points of a marquise are its most exposed edges.
