Buying guide

Why a marquise shape

The marquise is a long oval with a point at each end. It shows more surface than a round stone of the same weight, so it looks larger, and its length draws the eye up and down. On the ear it can sit upright for a lengthening line or slightly angled for a softer look. Aquamarine's pale blue color shows best across that wide face.

How the basket setting holds the stone

A basket setting is an open frame of metal under the stone, joined to the prongs that hold it. It lifts the aquamarine just off the earlobe and lets light in from the sides and below, which helps a light-colored gem look bright. The pointed tips of a marquise are its most delicate spots, so the prongs sit at the ends to protect them.

About aquamarine

Aquamarine is a blue variety of beryl and the birthstone for March. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, which is plenty for earrings, since they take few knocks. Its color is soft, so larger sizes show more blue: smaller pairs read as a quiet everyday touch, and the bigger options make a clear statement.

Metal and price

White gold, platinum and silver match the cool blue; yellow and rose gold give a warm contrast. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start under $175 at the smallest option, and most choices sit near $400.
