Buying guide

Kinds of side stones

  • Three stone: a lab-grown diamond on each side of the lab-grown ruby, in round, pear, marquise or trillion shapes.
  • Baguettes: long rectangular lab-grown diamonds, often channel set and tapered, for a clean, step-cut look.
  • Graduated rows: lab-grown diamonds that get smaller as they move down the band.
  • Pave and shared prong: small lab-grown diamonds along the band for steady sparkle.

A lab-grown ruby ring with lab-grown diamond side stones makes the center look wider on the hand. Pear and marquise sides point toward the center, and baguettes give a more structured, art deco line.

Lab-grown ruby

A lab-grown ruby is corundum, the same mineral as a natural ruby, with the same chemistry, hardness and red color from chromium. At 9 on the Mohs scale it stands up well to daily wear, second only to diamond among common ring stones. A lab-grown ruby costs far less than a natural ruby of the same size and color, and it is often cleaner to the eye.

Carat, metal and price

Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. White gold and platinum make the side lab-grown diamonds look brightest next to the red, and yellow or rose gold give a warmer ring. Rings start under $300 at the smallest size, and most start between about $800 and $1,290.
