A lab-grown ruby is corundum, the same mineral as a natural ruby, grown under controlled conditions. It has the same red color and rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond, so it suits a ring worn every day. Lab-grown ruby is the birthstone for July. A lab-grown ruby costs far less than a natural ruby of similar size and color.
Pave means rows of small stones set close together and held by tiny beads of metal, so the surface reads as one line of sparkle. In these rings the pave stones are lab-grown diamonds. The white light around the red center makes the lab-grown ruby's color stand out more. Pave can cover the band, the shoulders, a split shank or a halo.
Yellow and rose gold deepen the red; white gold, platinum and silver make it look brighter. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $750 and $1,050.
