Buying guide

Why a bezel suits a lab-grown emerald

Lab-grown emerald is about 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, softer than sapphire or diamond, and its edges can chip if knocked. A bezel covers those edges with metal, which makes a lab-grown emerald bezel band a sensible choice for a ring worn every day. Lab-grown emerald is the same mineral as natural emerald, beryl, and it costs far less than a natural emerald of similar color. Full bezels wrap the whole stone; partial or half bezels hold it at two sides and let more light in.

Pairing with an engagement ring

Curved and contour bands are shaped to sit close to an engagement ring, which works well for a lab-grown emerald bezel engagement ring with wedding band set. Straight half eternity bands stack easily or stand alone as an anniversary or birthstone ring for May. Round lab-grown emeralds are most common here, and some designs use marquise or trillion stones.

Carat weight, metal and price

Most designs offer about 0.25 to 0.5 carat total weight, and a few go to 1.5 carats. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow gold brings out the warmth of the green, white gold and platinum give it a cooler contrast, and silver is the lowest-priced option. Prices start under $200, and most bands fall between about $450 and $750 at their smallest option.
