Buying guide

How an inside-out hoop works

On an inside-out hoop, the lab-grown diamonds run along the outer face and continue around the inner face. Seen from the front, the hoop shows a double line of stones, so the earring looks fuller than a hoop set on one side only. Oval lab-grown diamonds are longer than round stones of the same weight, which gives the hoop a smooth, flowing line.

Why prong settings

Each oval sits in small prongs instead of a metal rim. Prongs show the most of each stone and let light in from the sides, which gives the most sparkle. They do need a gentle touch: check the prongs from time to time, and take the earrings off before sports or sleep.

Gold color and price

Gold oval hoops in yellow gold give a warm, classic look; white gold blends with the lab-grown diamonds for an all-bright hoop, and rose gold adds a soft pink tone. Oval hoop earrings in 14k gold are the usual middle choice, between the richer color of 18K and the extra hardness of 10K. The pair is just under $1,500.
