Buying guide
A heart-shaped stone has a point at the bottom and a cleft at the top, and both need care. Most settings hold the point with a V-shaped prong that covers the tip, and the two lobes with prongs on either side. A bezel setting wraps the whole outline in metal instead, which protects the point and suits an active day. A few designs add a hidden halo of small lab-grown diamond accents under the center, seen from the side.
A plain gold band keeps every eye on the heart. Pavé bands, offered on about half the range, add a line of lab-grown diamond accents along the shank. Bypass bands curve around the center, twisted bands wrap two strands together, and vintage designs bring milgrain edges and engraved detail. Some designs use a split shank or a cathedral setting that lifts the center higher. Band widths run from about 1.8 to 2.5 mm on most designs.
Every design comes in yellow, white and rose gold, in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow gold warms a fancy yellow center, white gold makes a blue or colorless stone look crisp, and rose gold flatters pink. Prices are for the setting alone and start at about $425; most settings fall between about $850 and $1,100. The center is priced when you choose it.
