Buying guide
A halo is a ring of small stones set around the center. It makes the center look larger, adds sparkle from every angle, and protects the center's edge. In a vintage halo the frame often carries milgrain beading, a scalloped rim or a graduated row of accents that steps down in size. Some designs use a double milgrain halo, a bezel station halo or a cluster halo for a more ornate look.
Most designs have milgrain edges and pavé lab-grown diamond accents on the band. Filigree galleries, floral motifs and engraved shanks show up on a smaller share. A few designs add a split shank, a bypass band, channel-set sides or three stone layouts. For a lighter look, pick a halo with a plain or thin pavé band; for more presence, choose a three-row pavé band or wide milgrain shoulders.
Every setting comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold. Yellow and rose gold lean warm and antique; white gold keeps the halo looking bright and icy. Prices start from about $650 for the setting, and most fall between about $875 and $1,100. That covers the setting only: the center is chosen and priced in the next step, either near-colorless or in blue, pink, yellow or green, with black available on some designs.
