Buying guide
Each design can be set with a range of colored gemstones. The lab-grown options are lab-grown ruby, lab-grown emerald, and lab-grown sapphire in blue, pink or yellow. The natural, treated options are amethyst, aquamarine, blue topaz, citrine, garnet, peridot and tanzanite. Lab-grown sapphire and lab-grown ruby are the hardest of these, at 9 on the Mohs scale, which makes them the most practical for daily wear. Tanzanite and the softer quartz stones such as amethyst and citrine need a little more care, as does lab-grown emerald.
Some designs add bezel-set accents on the shoulders, a split shank or a three stone layout.
Most designs let you choose from 1 to 9 carats total weight. Every design comes in white, yellow or rose gold, in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow and rose gold suit a warm vintage look; white gold makes blue and green stones look cooler and brighter. Prices start from about $725 at the smallest option, and most fall between about $875 and $1,100.
