You can choose lab-grown ruby, emerald, and blue, pink and yellow sapphire. The natural gems are tanzanite, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, garnet, peridot and blue topaz; these natural stones are treated, as most gems on the market are. Lab-grown gems have the same makeup as natural ones and cost less for a clean, even color. A lab-grown pink sapphire suits a soft, romantic look, and a birthstone gives the ring personal meaning.
For a ring worn every day, hardness matters. Lab-grown sapphire and ruby rate 9 on the Mohs scale and are the toughest choices. Topaz, aquamarine, garnet and lab-grown emerald sit around 7.5 to 8. Amethyst, citrine and peridot rate about 6.5 to 7, and tanzanite about 6.5, so they scratch more easily; a halo or bezel design gives these softer gems more protection.
A solitaire keeps the focus on the gem. Pave and halo designs add lab-grown diamond accents around the center or along the band for extra sparkle, and three stone designs flank the center with two smaller stones. Round and cushion shapes show the most brilliance, while oval, pear and marquise look longer on the finger. Prices start under $600, and most rings are between about $900 and $1,050.
