Buying guide

About aquamarine

Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl and the birthstone for March. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, which suits earrings well, since they take far fewer knocks than a ring. Its color ranges from pale sky blue to deeper sea blue. Most aquamarine on the market is heat treated to remove green tones and give a cleaner blue. Clean the studs with warm, soapy water and a soft brush, and store them apart from harder stones that could scratch them.

Choosing a shape and size

Round and cushion stones give a classic stud that suits everyday wear. Oval, pear and marquise look longer on the ear, and princess, emerald and heart shapes give a more distinct outline. The carat weight is the total for the pair: 0.5 to 1 carat total weight reads as a small, quiet stud, 2 to 3 carats stands out more, and the larger sizes up to 10 carats total weight make a bold statement.

Gold color and karat

Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. 14K gold is the common balance of strength and price, 18K has a richer color, and 10K is the most durable and affordable. Yellow gold warms the stone, rose gold gives a soft pairing, and white gold keeps the look cool and lets the color stand out. Prices start under $400.
