Buying guide

About the emerald cut

An emerald cut is a rectangular step cut with cut corners. Its long, flat facets act like a window into the stone, so they show color evenly instead of breaking it into sparkle. That suits amethyst well: the purple looks rich and steady across the stone. The cut corners also help protect the edges from chips, and the clean shape suits both everyday wear and dressier outfits.

About amethyst

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the birthstone for February. It rates 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is plenty for earrings, since they take fewer knocks than rings. The color runs from soft lilac to deep violet. Clean the studs with warm, soapy water and a soft brush, and keep them away from long, strong sunlight, which can fade the color over time.

Carat weight and metal

The studs are offered from 0.5 to 10 carats total weight. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Yellow and rose gold warm up the purple, while white gold, platinum and silver give a cooler look. Prices start under $200, and many pairs are around $400.
