Moissanite is silicon carbide, a near-colorless gem rated 9.25 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches and suits daily wear. It has very high brilliance and strong fire, which shows up as flashes of rainbow color in sunlight. It also costs much less than most white gems of the same size, which makes larger studs easier to reach.
The cushion cut is a soft square with rounded corners and broad facets. Those wide facets play up moissanite's fire, so a cushion stud shows bold, colorful flashes.
