Buying guide

What a three stone ring is

A three stone ring holds one larger center with a smaller stone on each side. The side stones widen the look across the finger and add sparkle without a halo. The 2.5 carat figure is the center lab-grown diamond on its own; the two side stones are extra.

Choosing the center shape

The center comes in round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, asscher, radiant, pear, marquise and heart. A few points to weigh:

  • Round and cushion give the most sparkle and a balanced row of three.
  • Oval, pear and marquise look longer on the finger and larger for their weight.
  • Emerald and asscher show wide step facets and a clean, structured look.
  • Princess and radiant keep corners and a crisp outline.

Band, metal and price

The band is slim, from about 1.8 to 2.2 mm, which keeps attention on the three stones and pairs easily with a wedding band. Platinum and white gold suit a bright look; yellow and rose gold warm it. The ring starts from about $2,000, center included, in the lowest-priced metal option.
