Buying guide
A 2.5 carat lab-grown diamond solitaire ring puts all the attention on the center stone. Some designs keep the band plain, either flat or rounded for comfort, so the metal frames the center without competing with it. Others line the band with small lab-grown diamond accents in a pavé setting, which adds sparkle along the finger on top of the center's weight. A few go further: a hidden halo tucks a row of small lab-grown diamonds under the center, seen from the side, and a cathedral design lifts the center on arched shoulders above a graduated pavé band.
At this size the shape changes how big the stone looks. Oval, pear, marquise and emerald cuts spread their weight over more length, so they can look larger on the hand than a round stone of the same weight. Round brilliants return the most sparkle, and princess cuts come close. Emerald and Asscher cuts have long, step-cut facets with a clean, glassy look that shows inclusions more easily. Cushion, radiant and heart shapes sit between those looks.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold, and every design is also offered in platinum. Prices start from about $1,800, and most rings sit between about $1,800 and $1,950 with the lab-grown diamond center included. Higher karats and platinum cost more. Lab-grown diamonds cost far less than natural diamonds of the same size, which keeps a 2.5 carat solitaire engagement ring within reach.
