Buying guide
A three stone ring, also called a trilogy ring, sets a larger center between two smaller stones. On this ring the 1.5 carat lab-grown diamond sits in the middle, and the side stones add width across the finger. The 1.5 carats is the center alone; the side stones add their own weight on top of it. The trio reads well from across a room and sits evenly on the hand.
Round gives the most sparkle and suits any band. Oval, pear and marquise stretch along the finger and can look larger than a round of the same weight. Princess, Asscher, emerald and radiant have square or rectangular outlines with a cleaner, more structured look; emerald and Asscher show long, mirror-like facets rather than scattered sparkle. Cushion has softened corners, and heart is the most playful choice.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, in white, yellow or rose. Higher karat means a richer color and a softer metal; 14K is a common middle ground. Platinum is naturally white, dense and hard-wearing. The band is offered in widths from about 1.8 to 2.2 mm, so you can keep it slim or give it a little more presence. Prices start from about $1,400 for the finished ring with its center, in the lowest-priced metal.
