Buying guide
A solitaire holds one main stone. In a vintage solitaire the band does more of the talking. Most designs here carry milgrain, a line of tiny beads along the edges. Many add engraving, floral motifs or filigree under the center, and some use a bezel, a cathedral rise or a twisted band. The look stays simple from a distance and rewards a closer look.
More than half of these solitaires set pave lab-grown diamond accents along the band, which adds sparkle without competing with the center. A few hide a small row of accents under the center, called a hidden halo, which shows from the side. If you prefer pure gold and engraving, choose one of the plain engraved or milgrain bands. Most designs can also hold a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some a black center, chosen in the next step.
Every setting comes in 10K, 14K or 18K yellow gold. 10K is the hardest and lightest in color, 18K is the richest yellow and a bit softer, and 14K balances the two. Yellow gold gives a vintage solitaire a warm, heirloom tone. Prices are for the setting only, from about $500, with most between about $950 and $1,200. The center is priced when you choose it.
