Buying guide
Vintage designs borrow details from older jewelry. Milgrain is a row of tiny beads along the metal edge. Filigree is fine, open metalwork, often under the stone in the gallery. Engraving adds leaf, vine or scroll patterns to the band. Most of these rings also carry pave lab-grown diamond accents, and some frame the garnet with a halo or set small bezel accents on the shoulders. These are new rings made to order in an antique style, not antique pieces.
Garnet is known for its deep red color and is the birthstone for January. It rates about 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it suits regular wear with some care. Yellow gold warms the red and suits the old-world look of milgrain and filigree. 10K is the hardest and most affordable gold, 14K is the usual everyday choice, and 18K has the richest yellow.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Clean the ring with warm, soapy water and a soft brush, which also clears dirt from milgrain and filigree. Take it off for heavy work so the garnet and the fine details stay crisp. Prices start under $750, and most rings are between about $850 and $1,000.
