Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl and the birthstone for March. Its color ranges from a pale, watery blue to a deeper sea blue, and clean stones look bright and glassy. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it holds up well to daily wear. Pale stones gain color as they grow, so a larger aquamarine often shows a richer blue.
Yellow gold gives aquamarine a warm, sunny frame. The contrast between gold and pale blue is softer and more vintage in feel than the icy look of white metal, and it can bring out the slight green in some stones.
