Peridot is the gem form of olivine and the birthstone for August. It comes in one family of color, a fresh yellow-green to a deeper olive green, and a lively lime tone is the most popular. It rates about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, softer than many ring stones, so it is happiest in a ring worn with some care. Avoid sudden temperature changes and harsh chemicals, and clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
