An oval is a stretched round, so it keeps much of a round's sparkle while looking larger for its weight, because more of the stone faces up. Its length also makes fingers look longer and slimmer. Many ovals show a darker area across the middle, called a bow tie; a faint one is normal, so look for a stone where it is light. Most people choose a length-to-width ratio between about 1.3 and 1.5.
