A marquise is a long oval with pointed ends. It has a large face for its weight, so the center looks bigger than a round of the same carat, and its length makes fingers look slimmer. The two points are the delicate part of the stone, which is why most marquise settings protect them with V-shaped prongs.
Pave designs line the band with small lab-grown diamond accents, and many settings are clean solitaires. Halo settings frame the marquise with lab-grown diamond accents, which adds sparkle and makes the center look larger. Side stone and three-stone designs place smaller stones beside the center, sometimes marquise or pear shaped. Vintage settings add milgrain, filigree or engraving, and split shank or twisted bands give a fuller look on the hand.
Besides a white center, most settings take a fancy pink, blue, yellow or green marquise, and some take a black one. Silver shows these colors clearly. Most bands are about 1.8 to 2.5 mm wide. Settings start under $150, and most begin between about $300 and $410. The price is for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
