Buying guide
Vintage-style rings borrow details from older jewelry. Milgrain is a fine row of tiny metal beads along the edges; filigree is open, lace-like metalwork under the center; engraving adds leaves or scrolls to the shoulders. Several designs circle the lab-grown ruby with a halo of lab-grown diamonds, and some hide a halo under the center. A few are solitaires with only engraved or milgrain detail, and others add bezel accents, a swirl or a split shank.
A lab-grown ruby has the same chemistry and crystal structure as a natural ruby, the red variety of corundum, and shows the same strong red at a far lower price. A lab-grown ruby is 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond, so it suits a ring worn every day. It is the July birthstone. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, so the center can be a modest stone or a large, bold one. Red against white metal gives a crisp contrast, and the elongated shapes, such as oval, pear and marquise, look longer on the finger.
Most bands are about 2 mm wide, with some at 1.8 mm or 2.2 mm and a few at 2.5 mm. Prices start from about $325, and most rings begin between about $375 and $430 at their smallest option. Silver is softer than gold, so take the ring off for heavy work.
