A lab-grown sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as a natural sapphire, grown under controlled conditions. It has the same hardness, about 9 on the Mohs scale, and the same color range, at a lower price than natural sapphire of similar quality. That hardness makes a lab-grown blue sapphire ring in silver practical for everyday wear.
Most designs set lab-grown diamond accents along the band in pave, which brightens the deep blue. Solitaires keep the lab-grown sapphire alone on a plain or flat band. Halo and double halo designs frame it with small lab-grown diamonds, and side stone and three stone designs add baguettes, pears or marquise accents. A few use split shanks, bypass bands, milgrain or a bezel.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, picked on the product page. Some designs also let you choose a band width, most often 1.8 to 2.2 mm. Silver keeps the cost low: rings start at about $250, and most are between about $375 and $425 at their smallest option. Silver is softer than gold, so an occasional polish keeps the band bright.
