Types of side stones

An engagement ring with side stones can take many shapes. Three stone designs, with one matched stone on each side of the center, make up a large part of this collection. Marquise and pear side stones point toward the center and add length. Baguettes and trapezoids give a clean step-cut line, and some rings with side stones use a tapered pair of baguettes. Trillions add a sharp triangle. Princess cut side stones suit square centers.

How the side stones are set

  • Prong set: the most light reaches each stone, the classic look.
  • Channel set: stones sit between two metal walls, with a smooth surface.
  • Bar set: thin metal bars between stones leave the sides open.
  • Bezel set: a metal rim around each stone, low and protective.

Matching shapes, metal and price

Each engagement ring setting with side stones is offered in most center shapes, so you can pair, for example, an oval center with pear sides. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Platinum suits detailed prongs, and silver keeps the cost lowest. Band widths mostly run about 1.8 to 2.5 mm. Many designs can also be ordered for a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center. Settings start under $250, and most are between about $880 and $1,380. That price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.

Made to order

Each ring is made for you in 10–15 days. Shipping is free on orders over $500, returns are accepted within 30 days, and one resize is free within 60 days of delivery.

Side Stone Engagement Rings FAQs

What are the side stones on an engagement ring called?

They are usually called side stones or accent stones. On a three stone ring, the two stones next to the center are often just called the sides. Small stones set in rows along the band are called pave, and stones held between metal walls are channel set. Named shapes are also used, such as baguette, pear or marquise side stones. On these settings, the side stones are lab-grown diamond accents.

How big should side stones be on an engagement ring?

Side stones are usually noticeably smaller than the center, often around a third to a half of its width, so the center stays the focus. Larger sides give a bolder three stone look, while small accents keep attention on the center. The setting decides the size here: each design is built to fit its own side stones, so choose the look you like and pick the center size in the next step.

Do side stones make diamonds look bigger?

Yes, they can. Side stones add width and extra sparkle across the top of the ring, which makes the whole face look larger. Pear and marquise sides point toward the center and draw the eye to it. A thin band helps too, since the center looks bigger against less metal. Side stones also add protection along the band and let you show more sparkle without a larger center.
