What a princess cut solitaire looks like

A solitaire has one center stone and nothing around it, so the shape of the stone and the head that holds it set the look. A princess cut is square with pointed corners and many facets, so it shows a lot of sparkle for its size. Look for prongs that cover the corners, since they are the most exposed part of the stone. Prongs hold the center on most designs; a bezel wraps it in a thin rim of metal for a smooth, secure fit. A cathedral setting lifts the head on arches of metal, and a hidden halo adds a ring of small accents under the center that shows from the side.

Choosing the band

About half the designs have a pave band, which adds sparkle without taking attention from the center. Plain bands keep the look clean and make it easy to pair a wedding band. Twisted, bypass and split shank bands add movement, and vintage designs bring milgrain, filigree or engraving. Band widths on the product page run from about 1.8 to 2.5 mm on most designs, and a thin band makes the center look larger.

Gold, colored centers and price

  • Rose gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. 14K is a good balance of color and hardness for daily wear.
  • Most designs can be set for a fancy color center in blue, pink, yellow or green, and some for a black center.
  • Settings start under $450, and most are between about $850 and $1,100. That price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
