Buying guide
An oval is a stretched brilliant cut, so it sparkles much like a round and looks longer on the finger. A halo traces that outline with small accents, which makes the center look larger and adds light at the edge. Set lengthwise, an oval halo also makes the finger look slimmer.
Most designs edge the halo or band with milgrain, a line of tiny metal beads common in Edwardian and Art Deco rings. Many add pavé lab-grown diamond accents along the band. A smaller group uses filigree, the open scrollwork under and beside the center, and others add engraved scrolls, leaf and floral motifs, bezel-set accents, graduated stones or a split shank. A few take Art Deco lines with pavé side panels.
Rose gold's warm pink tone comes from copper in the alloy, and it pairs naturally with vintage styling. 10K and 14K are slightly pinker and harder; 18K has a richer color. Most designs also take a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some take black. Settings start from about $650, and most are between about $850 and $1,100. That price covers the setting only; the center is chosen and priced in the next step.
