Buying guide

Why moissanite works as a side stone

Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it stands up well to daily wear on the shoulders of a ring, where stones take the most knocks. It has strong fire, the colorful flashes you see when light moves through a stone, which gives the band plenty of sparkle around the center. Keep in mind that moissanite and diamond are different stones with different optical character, so the side stones can look a touch more colorful than the center you choose.

Side stone styles on this page

  • Pavé and fine-line bands: small moissanite set close together along the shank for a steady line of light.
  • Three stone: a larger side stone on each side of the center, including pear-shaped side stones on some settings.
  • Hidden halo and halo: a ring of small stones around or under the center, paired with a set band.
  • Marquise, pear and graduated sides: shaped stones that step down in size toward the back of the ring.

Metal, karat and price

Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K on every design here. Platinum is the densest and most durable choice, and silver is the lightest on the budget. Bands are slim, mostly around 2 to 2.2 mm. Settings start under $250, and most are between about $650 and $900. That price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
